The Auditor General opened CRISP Enterprise Risk Management Lessons Learned Workshop

The Auditor General of Rwanda, Kamuhire Alexis, on 13 October 2026 officially opened a four-day CRISP Enterprise Risk Management Lessons Learned Workshop. The workshop took place at Sheraton Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda.

Facilitated by the INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI), the workshop brought together six Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) from Rwanda, Zimbabwe, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Botswana, and Uganda. It aimed to discuss risk management practices and share lessons learned among the participating SAIs.

During his opening remarks, Auditor General Kamuhire urged participants to consider risks in decision-making, strategic planning and organizational culture.

β€œI warmly welcome all the participants from Botswana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Rwanda. I also extend a special welcome to our colleagues from IDI and AFROSAI-E, whose support and expertise are vital to this workshop's success. I am happy that Rwanda is hosting this important gathering. I wish to thank IDI and AFROSAI-E for their continued partnership and commitment to strengthening the capacity of Supreme Audit Institutions across our region.  The work of Supreme Audit Institutions takes place in an environment of changing risks, increasing expectations and limited resources. To deliver on our mandates effectively, we must be able to identify, assess and manage risks that may affect our operations, strategic objectives and institutional performance. Enterprise Risk Management is therefore not simply a policy or a compliance exercise. It should be part of our everyday decision-making, strategic planning and organisational culture. It requires clear leadership, defined responsibilities, effective monitoring and a shared understanding that managing risk is everyone's responsibility.”

He added β€œThe CRISP Initiative should provide an important opportunity for SAIs to strengthen their enterprise risk management, crisis management and business continuity arrangements. This workshop is particularly valuable because it allows us to reflect on the progress made since the regional workshop in December 2022, examine what has worked, identify the gaps that remain, and learn from one another's experiences.

I encourage all participants to engage openly and actively throughout these four days. The experiences of each participating SAI can offer valuable lessons to others.”

AG Kamuhire encouraged present SAIs to focus on practical actions that can be implemented within their respective institutions.  He advised the goal should be to move beyond understanding risk management concepts to making risk management a sustainable part of SAIs systems, strategies, processes and organisational culture.

He reminded that success of the workshop will be measured by the changes made by SAIs and emphasized how it is crucial for every participant to take ownership of the lessons learned and work with their leadership and colleagues to put them into practice.

The Auditor General Kamuhire concluded his remarks thanking AFROSAI-E, the facilitators and all participating SAIs for their commitment to this important initiative. He also wished participants productive discussions, meaningful peer learning, and a successful workshop.

The workshop was meant to assist each participating SAI to have a clearer understanding of its progress, the gaps that require attention and the priority actions needed to strengthen the institutionalization of risk management.

The purpose was also to review progress since the December 2022 regional workshop, identify implementation gaps and agree practical measures for institutionalizing risk management in participating SAIs.
