Deputy Auditor General opened workshop on root cause analysis facilitated by NAO UK
The Deputy Auditor General (DAG), Patrick Habimana, on 31 August 2026 officially opened a 5-day workshop on Performance Audit, facilitated by UK National Audit Office through bilateral cooperation with OAG Rwanda.The workshop aims to strengthen understanding of performance audit methodology, with a particular focus on root cause analysis.
During his opening remarks, DAG Habimana emphasized the role of the workshop to SAI Rwanda
“As a Supreme Audit Institution, we are continuously seeking to improve the quality, relevance, efficiency, and impact of our audit work. Strong compliance and performance audits are essential to providing assurance, promoting accountability, and improving the management of public resources and service delivery. The training programme will cover key aspects of the audit process, including work programming and how strategic priorities influence the selection of performance audit topics, while comparing OAG Rwanda and UK NAO approaches.
He added that “the workshop will focus on planning for impact, scoping audits, identifying desired impacts, developing evidence-based evaluative criteria, stakeholder mapping, and selecting appropriate audit methods. In addition, participants will strengthen their skills in root cause analysis, quality evidence, and developing targeted and useful recommendations that enable audits to go beyond identifying weaknesses and contribute to meaningful improvements.”
He encouraged all participants to actively engage in the discussions, practical exercises, and experience-sharing sessions and use the opportunity not only to acquire new knowledge and skills, but also to reflect on our current practices and identify approaches that can strengthen the quality and impact of our compliance and performance audits.
He also commended the UK National Audit Office (SAI Rwanda’s partners) and the facilitators provided from the National Audit office for their continued technical cooperation and supporting in the capacity-building programme of OAG Rwanda.
