OAG Continues to Contribute to the Management of the Mining Industry
From Tuesday, 08 October 2024 until 10 October 2024, OAG Rwanda hosted the seventh annual steering committee meeting of the INTOSAI Working Group for the Audit of Extractive Industries (WGEI). The meeting was chaired by Mr. Edward Akol, the Auditor General of Uganda and chair of WGEI, and attended by the Auditor Generals of Rwanda and Zambia.
In his welcome address to the delegates, Mr. Alexis Kamuhire, the Auditor General of Rwanda, reminded participants of WGEI’s scope and emphasized how OAG Rwanda contributes to the management of the mining industry in Rwanda.
“The scope of WGEI covers oil, gas, and minerals, which are abundant in Rwanda and the region. SAI Rwanda plays a role in ensuring proper management of the extractive industry in the interest of citizens and the environment. Over the past 10 years, we have conducted four performance audits in the management of the mining sector. These include performance audits on environmental management of mining activities, government revenues from extractive industries, a follow-up audit on environmental protection in mining activities, and we are currently conducting an audit on the licensing and inspection of mining operations.”
As the head of a SAI member of INTOSAI WGEI, the Auditor General committed that OAG Rwanda will continue to expand audits of the extractive industries to promote transparent governance, sustainable development, and accountability, which are core priorities for Rwanda.
Mr. Edward Akol, the Auditor General of Uganda and chair of INTOSAI WGEI highlighted that the discussions at the 7th annual steering committee meeting would focus on four pillars: the status and implementation of the WGEI three-year activity plan (2023-2025), sharing experiences on the performance of extractive industries, agreeing on the priorities for 2024/2025 activities, and providing networking opportunities.
The WGEI was established in 2013 under INTOSAI Goal 3, Knowledge Sharing, and comprises 46 members from all five INTOSAI regions.
